About Rick Spencer

Rick Spencer Rick Spencer is the president of CA Wordsmith, LLC. Located in the Dayton, Ohio area, CA Wordsmith provides professional writing services that help businesses communicate their messages effectively. He brings over 30 years of experience assisting nonprofit organizations in developing results-oriented communications plans, scripts, newsletters, news releases, and other educational and promotional materials.

Before forming CA Wordsmith, he worked at the Obici Healthcare Foundation (Suffolk, Virginia), Bon Secours Hampton Roads (Virginia), Ohio Commission Minority Health (Columbus, Ohio), and Mount Carmel Health (Columbus, Ohio).

Work Experience

Obici Healthcare Foundation
As an Obici Healthcare Foundation Program Resource Officer, he worked in close collaboration with nonprofit healthcare organizations by helping them design brochures and communication strategies that raised awareness about programs and services being offered, which could lead to better health outcomes. He also served as the editor of the foundation’s annual reports and a quarterly publication called In a Nutshell.

Rick effectively facilitated numerous partnerships among nonprofit organizations. He did this by aligning agencies with similar goals and objectives to expand their reach and improve efficiencies by foster collaborations.

Bon Secours Hampton Roads
Let’s Get Real was a program managed by Rick when he served as the Community Relations Manager for Bon Secours Hampton Roads. This heart disease risk-reduction model focused on four key areas. They were:

  • Cooking Light – Healthy eating
  • Rhythm of Life – Exercise
  • Check Yourself – Health screenings
  • Tree of Life – Family health histories

Rick’s leadership formed partnerships between Bon Secours and churches in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Newport News, and Suffolk. He raised over $400,000 over a three-year period that supported program operations.

Ohio Commission on Minority Health
The Ohio Commission on Minority Health funds community-based organizations to administer culturally-diverse grant programs targeting heart disease, cancer, infant mortality, diabetes, substance abuse, violence prevention, HIV/AIDS, children’s health insurance and lupus.

Rick, who was Associate Director of this state agency, was responsible for consulting, reviewing, and improving printed material generated by grantees and he served as the editor of HUE, the commission's quarterly publication.

Mount Carmel Health
As the Director Of Public Affairs At Mount Carmel Health, Rick had the opportunity to hone his media relations skills by serving as the spokesperson for the healthcare systems Corporate Division. He was responsible for garnering more than $100,000 per year in free advertising.

Wordsmith can benefit from Rick’s reporting background with the Columbus Dispatch and Call & Post; a legislative aide with the Ohio House of Representatives, where he served as the official house photographer; and the director of Communications at the Ohio Department of Commerce.
